Fraser Island FAQ
- Is Fraser Island Four Wheel Drive only ?
Yes, the only vehicle access to Fraser Island is by 4wd. There are no sealed roads on the island.
- Do I need a permit to visit Fraser Island ?
A permit is required if you plan on taking your car or motorbike onto the island, no permit is required for walkers or visitor on organised tours.
- Do I need a permit to camp on Fraser Island ?
A camping permit is required only if you are not staying in privately owned accommodation on Fraser Island
- Where do I purchase permits for Fraser Island and How much do they cost ?
Visitors have the option of purchaseing either a National Parks Permit or an Indidgenous permit (Indige Pass)
National Parks permits can be purchased fro their office on the right hand side of the road as you enter Rainbow Beach and cost $31.85 per month for a vehicle permit and $4 per person a night for camping permits.
An IndigePass can be purchased from outsite the National Parks office or from Shell Tourist Centre Rainbow Beach costing $15 per month for a vehicle permit and $2 per person a night for camping permits.
- What time do the Barges leave and how much do they cost ?

- Can I take my dog to Fraser Island ?
No domestic animals may be taken to the Island.
- Are the any dog kennels in rainbow fow my dog when I visit the Island ?
No. The closest kennel is located in Gympie.
Rainbow Beach FAQ
- Where can I camp ?
Camp grounds are located at Inskip Point, Freshwater Camp ground, Poverty Point and Teewah Beach south of Little Freshwater Creek. Camping is also available in the caravan parks within Rainbow Beach.
- How do I see the Coloured Sand ?
The Coloured Sands of Rainbow Beach can be seen by Driving a 4wd along the Beach, Walking to Carlo Sandblow (600 meter walk from carpark), Take a tour of Cooloola National Park and Coloured sands or Catch the 4wd Taxi.
- Do I need a permit to drive on Rainbow Beach ?
No you do not need a permit to drive on the beach.
